Folio Issue cut down to match the set, the Fourth the small paper folio. the First Two Volumes being The Quarto Subscribers Editions, with the appropriate head and tailpieces, the Third Volume is Pope's preferred L. The Works: Folding portrait of Pope in Vol I. Vol V with shield of Achilles, slightly trimmed. I with engraved folding bird's-eye view of Troy and the battlefield, and also engraved double-page plate with maps of Greece and Phrygia. With engraved initials, head & tail-pieces Iliad Vol. I of each set with copper-engraved frontispiece bust of Homer title pages printed in red & black title page of Odyssey Vol. Internally the leaves are generally clean and amply margined, with a wormhole in volume four from the front paste down into the initial leaves, and with mild toning and foxing in each volume. The Works, with hinges repaired, and with board corners bumped a bit. Internally the paper is lightly toned, with some offsetting and minor staining and one letterpress tear not affecting the text. The Homer sets are completely unrestored, with some hinges cracked, but in remarkable condition given the delicate gilding. For all volumes, externally the boards and spines are lightly scuffed in general, with some scuffing to the board edges and spine. Spines decoratively tooled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering pieces, with the leaf edges red speckled. The Works and Letters are re-backed retaining gilt-ruled calf boards and spines.
